Job Description

  • Analyse, evaluate and make underwriting decisions in line with underwriting guidelines and recommendations, coordinating with analysts and other underwriting staff;
  • Completes a range of queries and referrals within agreed authority limits, measuring the exposure & analyzing the risk of each case to maintain underwriting standards.
  • In conjunction with the COO, define underwriting strategy and recommend business plans that will generate continued profitable business growth in current and future markets;
  • Review and analyse new insurance applications for risk exposure and compliance with underwriting guidelines. Consistently identifies and contributes to the development and improvement of technical underwriting standards, controls, practices and procedures to better meet business goals
  • Lead development of business cases for projects to determine potential benefits, clarify the rationale for investment and support the planning process.
  • Contributes to the delivery of underwriting strategy by proactively sharing best practices across territories and functions
  • Involved in Compliance screening related tasks and ensure continuous compliance of regulations/ procedures are compliant at all times. Provide top priority service to all complaint cases.
  • Works closely with Business Development teams and other operational areas to drive achievement of the business plan, leveraging knowledge to impact strategy relating to underwriting expertise, systems, procedures and processes.
  • Completes assignments of the highest complexity while working within delegated authority.
  • Serves as an expert in all areas of Individual Life and/or Medical underwriting, consulting as needed, driving needed changes or developments to achieve business goals.
  • To provide technical underwriting expertise and guidance to Business Development, Intermediaries and clients, consistently providing excellent customer service; to build and to develop new and renewal business
  • Review contract wordings and act as signatory of insurance contracts;
  • Review, evaluate and report on loss activity;
  • Manage, train and appraise junior members of staff to enhance the underwriting skills within the underwriting team. Consistently takes ownership for personal development and acts as a role model contributing to a positive and supportive team culture.
  • Responsible for underwriting document filings, accuracy of data entries to systems and contract integrity for accounts underwritten;
  • Contribute to strategic planning and to overall management of the company;
  • Assist the COO and Senior Management in establishing operational structures;
  • Establish appropriate internal underwriting procedures and criteria to control risk;
  • Oversee the development of the company’s underwriting systems. Drives quality for the team, providing feedback on errors and providing root cause analysis of errors to avoid repeated mistakes; implements change or remedial action where appropriate.

 

Job Requirement

  • A minimum of 4-5years’ underwriting experience, with in-depth knowledge of Life and/or Medical lines markets;
  • Bachelor’s degree in actuary, mathematics, statistics or related field would be an advantage
  • Strong math, analytical skills and numerical aptitude are essential to complete job requirements successfully
  • Demonstrable track record of profitable transactions and generating business growth;
  • Demonstrable experience in writing and executing underwriting business plans;
  • Experience in structuring and purchasing direct and reinsurance business will be highly desirable;
  • Broad operational skills and experience in an underwriting or broking environment, including budgetary management, financial management, claims, resource allocation;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, together with the ability to work well in a young and aggressive team environment;
