To achieve a certain goal or career path, there must be some criteria or requirements to be met for each individual. From the management perspective, there was a term that introduced by George T. Doran, namely SMART criteria/objectives which can defines the process and steps towards a goal. It is essential as a guidance for setting of objectives in project management, employee-performance management as well as personal development. However, in this sophisticated era, most of the employees and youngsters are encountering failure or dilemma to accomplish their goal and career path. The main reason which led to the failure is due to lack of the concepts as driven by the SMART criteria.
Goals should be specific and clearly define what you are going to do. This happens frequently as most of the people are lack of specific goal for themselves, for instance loss of direction during the starting point or lost track in midway. To be clear and emphasized, if one who tends to look for an accounting job, he should not mention available to other jobs such as admin, customer service and etc. Thus, making up clear minds on what to be before pursuing is essential to be specific.
Goals should be measurable in order to accomplish it. Therefore, always remind and ask one that, ‘is the goal measurable with efforts and hard works?’, ‘is it possible to achieve it?’ and others related questions. Achieving an unmeasurable goal is most likely impossible, thus set one that is measurable.
Goals should be attainable by possessing appropriate knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to achieve the goal. One should have honed the skills learnt, familiar with the systems used and accumulate different experiences while carrying out a job role to attain a specific goal.
Goals should be relevant by measuring results and outcomes related to the individual, but not activities. In order to align with the goal set, one should perform tasks and carry out the job role which is relevant to his career and knowledge. Therefore, doing unnecessary might end up irrelevant to career path and may misled to differed direction.
Goals should be linked to a time frame that creates a practical sense of urgency, or results in tension between the current reality and the vision of the goal. Without such tension, the goal is unlikely to produce a relevant outcome. Setting a certain timeline is a good practice in order to track and measure the duration needed to achieve certain goals. For example, one tends to become a manager in a firm, it is compulsory to set at least a 5 years’ timeline in order to accomplish that.
